The man, the myth, the legend. Phil Brooks, aka CM Punk, has not been seen in a professional wrestling ring since the 2014 Royal Rumble and has been the topic of conversion ever since he left.
His name is chanted at times during WWE events. Even Stephanie McMahon had to acknowledge him one night during Monday Night RAW. Most recently, Elias mentioned CM Punk during his promo with John Cena.
Since Punk’s departure, the burning question remains – will CM Punk return?
Here are two fantasy booking scenarios where I think Punk might return.
Scenario #1 – Punk returns at the Royal Rumble.
I’m not saying it will be this Royal Rumble, but the Rumble would be an excellent place for his WWE return.
Punk always said he earned and deserved the main event at WrestleMania. As we all know, the winner of the Royal Rumble should get the main event at WrestleMania. The fantasy booking scenario goes like this: the last entrant to the Rumble is about to enter. The fans count down – 3…2…1…buzzer sounds. Cult of Personality blasts through the arena’s system. The roof would literally explode off of the arena.
Everyone in the ring stops to look in utter shock. As the camera pans to the entrance way, we see the ever familiar hoodie over his head. He bends down, taps his wrist, his hand cupped around his mouth, and yells, “IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME!!!”
Every wrestler, fan, mark, and marks mothers jaw would hit the ground.
Punk makes his way to the ring, eventually throwing out Triple H or Roman Reigns to win.
Then, Punk fades away, only popping in and out like Brock Lesnar until Mania, where he wins the WWE Title. The twist could be Punk aligning with Hunter & Stephanie, but not sure if he would go for that unless he’s getting A LOT of money.
Scenario 2 – Bullet Club All In Show
Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks are planning on funding their own 10,000 person event; and what better way to guarantee a sellout and stick it to any doubter from the WWE, than by having their current biggest adversary show up at the event.
The event itself should sell out. Bullet Club is the hottest faction in professional wrestling. Cody is an even bigger name on the indy scene than he ever was in his time in WWE, and The Young Bucks are money.
Add in Hangman Page, Marty Scurll, Stephen Amell and, arguably the best wrestler in the world Kenny Omega, and this currently unnamed arena would exceed capacity.
Picture this — the main event of Bullet Club 10,000 is happening. The lights go out. When they come back on, in the ring is someone with a hood over his head with his head down. He unzips his jacket to reveal the Bullet Club Chicago shirt.
He flips back his hood, and the arena explodes with cheers as the Straight Edge Superstar stands in the middle of the ring. Punk hits the GTS, helping Bullet Club win the match.
From there, Punk signs with Ring of Honor, wins their World title & challenges the New Japan IWGP Heavyweight Champion at WrestleKingdom 13 and wins their title. What better way to stick it to WWE than winning the titles for two of WWE’s biggest rival promotions.
As a fan of CM Punk, his return would be great for the business. In reality, however, he is enjoying his time with his beautiful wife AJ Lee and pursuing a mixed martial arts career. Hopefully, CM Punk returns one day, but, until that day, the question will always remain — What if?
