For the fourth year in a row, the Big Dog is charging towards the main event of WrestleMania. This year has a different feel to it though.
Now fans may disagree and that is fair, but this year feels like it may finally be the right time for Roman Reigns. And yes, I know, Reigns has been the chosen one to carry the company on his back for years. But with the WrestleMania 34 fast approaching, Reigns is poised to finally get the torch passed.
Originally it was thought that Roman had to defeat Cena on the grandest stage in order to truly take the baton, but that was achieved at No Mercy this past winter. In Manias past, Roman has defeated Triple H, The Undertaker and has fallen just short of winning the title from Brock Lesnar in the triple threat also including Seth Rollins. Those are some major names to have on your resume, The Undertaker being the biggest. And that’s where this story begins.
That victory of The Undertaker at WrestleMania is what set Reigns on the trajectory he’s currently on. The night after Mania Roman uttered the 5 words that would propel his career, “This is my yard now.” That’s all it took, the fans were damn near ready to burn the arena to the ground. Ever since that night, it’s appeared Roman was set for the main event of the next WrestleMania.
Reigns builds his case for being “The Guy”
It wasn’t too far down the road that it had been leaked that the long-term plan for WrestleMania 34 would pit Roman Reigns against Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship. This instantly upset the wrestling world as not only were they being told that match they were getting a year in advance, but it was a guy they weren’t fond of. Thus the irrational Roman Reigns hatred would reach a fever pitch.
No matter what this guy did, a very vocal part of the audience would just take a dump on him. But Reigns took every boo, every jeer, and each and every negative reaction and used it as his fuel. In 2017, Roman Reigns consistently put out great match after great match, further proving why he was the chosen one. It didn’t matter the match type, opponent, or venue, Reigns came to play each and every night.
Winning the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34 will be the final step to Reigns taking over the thrown form Cena. He already has the nod of approval not only from the office but the guys that held the mantle before him. With rumors of Brock Lesnar either going back to MMA or full on retiring after his contract expires at Mania. it’s the only logical step to place the gold around Roman’s waist.
So with WrestleMania 34 fastly approaching, the WWE may very well follow through with the proposed Reigns-Lesnar matchup. Fans will boo and hiss but when the bell rings, they’ll bite at each and every near fall. There is a reason why Roman Reigns is in the position he is, and no it isn’t just because he is in “the family.” He is a hell of a talent, he can wrestle his ass off, he can cut a hell of a promo when it’s from the heart, and he is there each and every week. That’s what a company looks for when they choose their franchise player, just see: Cena, John.
