WWE Fastlane marked the last pay-per-view on the road to WrestleMania!
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Rusev:
In the opener, Shinsuke Nakamura was able to overcome Rusev despite the crowd being very split. At this point in time, it seems crazy that we may not see the Bulgarian Brute on the main ‘Mania card even though he was over with the crowd. The King of Strong Style was able to pick up a win with a Kinshasa just as Rusev seemed to be gaining momentum. Surprisingly, this was an enjoyable match to open the card and anything but a walk-over for Nakamura.
Bobby Roode vs. Randy Orton:
A slower paced match between two veterans ended with Randy Orton becoming United States Champion for the first time in his career. A showdown that included some lovely power moves including a stunning Roode Spinebuster and a lovely Orton Superplex ended with The Viper hitting an RKO in mid-air to put away Roode.
After the match, Jinder Mahal came to the ring to confront Orton, attacking him before getting a Glorious DDT from The Glorious One. For his troubles, Orton also got a Glorious DDT from Roode. Did this confirm a heel turn for Roode?
Becky Lynch & Naomi vs. Carmella & Natalya:
A short match with a confusing result. As a throwaway match, many expected the babyface team to go over, but they came up short as Carmella got the pin on Becky Lynch.
The Usos vs. The New Day:
We have come to expect good matches from whichever four competitors face off in the ring, and they did not disappoint until the Bludgeon Brothers intervened. The two sides stole each others move-sets and connected with several superkicks before Harper and Rowan made their way to ring and destroyed everyone within sight. The Usos retain their belts via disqualification.
Charlotte Flair vs. Ruby Riott:
With friends in either corner, this match failed to really get going.
Some sloppy moves in between shenanigans led to Becky Lynch and Naomi getting ejected before Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan followed soon after. Riott controlled a lot of the match, but Charlotte Flair was able to retain after locking in the Figure-8 Leg Lock.
After the conclusion of the match, Royal Rumble winner Asuka danced down to the ring and pointed to the WrestleMania sign hanging from the roof. It seems as though that match is set, with Asuka’s winning streak on the line.
AJ Styles vs. John Cena vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin vs. Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens
With Commissioner Shane McMahon at ringside, Smackdown’s top guys really brought their all in this bout for the WWE Championship.
These matches must be a nightmare to book, but everyone got their good share of offense in, having the crowd oohing and ahhing repeatedly.
John Cena got in an early set of AA’s on everybody besides Styles, Styles later performed his Styles Clash on Cena to get a two-count. Ziggler went through some plastic boarding at the hands of Baron Corbin before Cena absolutely nailed an AA on Styles through the US announce table.
Sami Zayn laid down for best friend Kevin Owens to pin him before then rolling up Owens for a close two-count of his own. There are plenty of spots which are worthy of mentioning, including McMahon continuing his feud with Zayn and Owens. Then, as expected, AJ Styles managed to retain his WWE Championship with a perfect Phenomenal Forearm on Kevin Owens and confirm his match at WrestleMania against Shinsuke Nakamura.
