A Career Retrospective: Dudley Boys

This is the sixth part of a five-part series looking at the 2018 inductees into the WWE Hall of Fame. Usually, the WWE only inducts five people, so I prepared writing for five weeks. This year, though, they inducted a tag team as well, arguably the greatest of all time. My career retrospectives of Hillbilly Jim, Ivory, Mark Henry, Jeff Jarrett, and Goldberg. Today we will be looking at The Dudley Boyz. The only tag team to hold the WWE, WWF/World, ECW, WCW, NWA, TNA and IWGP Tag Team Championships.

Mark Lomonaco (Buh-Buh Ray) was born on July 14, 1971, in Queens, NY. Mark went to St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York and was trained by Johnny Rodz. Devon Hughes (D-Von Dudley) was born August 1, 1972, in New Rochelle, NY. and was also trained by Rodz which is where he first met Lomonaco.

The idea of the Dudley Family was that their father “Big Daddy Dudley” had a lot of kids with different women. The original members were Dudley Dudley, Big Dick Dudley, and Snot Sudley. The Dudleys all shared taped glasses and overalls based on the Hanson Brothers from the movie Slapshot.

After Snot Dudley was injured, he was replaced by Dances with Dudley. He was quickly joined by Chubby Dudley and Sign Guy Dudley. In 1995, a stuttering hillbilly Buh-Buh Ray Dudley joined the group. Throughout 1995, Buh-Buh and Dances teamed together challenging for the ECW tag team belts.

In 1996, D-Von Dudley joined starting a war against the “comic” Dudleys. He attacked All the Dudleys permanently getting rid of Chubby and Dances. Eventually, Buh-Buh, Sign Guy. Big Dick and newly arriving Little Spike Dudley joined with D-Von to form a dominant heel faction. Between March 1997 and August 1999 The Dudley Boyz (D-Von and Buh-Buh) would hold the ECW tag team championships on 8 occasions.

In late 1999 The Dudley Boyz joined the WWE. Buh-Buh was now known as Bubba Ray, and D-Von changed from their overalls and tie die to camouflage with few other changes. During this time the Dudley Boyz began to use their finisher (The 3-D) and started putting people through tables, something they’d be known for their entire career.

Between 1999-2005 The Dudleys would win the WWE World tag team on 8 occasions and the WCW World tag team belts once. At the end of 1995, The Dudley Boyz and the WWE ran into several disagreements. The WWE released Spike Dudley, for cost-cutting reasons, who was close to the Dudley Boyz. Furthermore, the WWE legally claimed The Dudley Boyz name which D-Von and Bubba felt was given to them by Paul Heyman. They decided to leave the WWE and go to TNA.

On September 21,2005 the Dudley Boyz joined TNA as Brother Ray and Brother Devon, Team 3-D. Between 2005-2008, The Dudley Boyz won the TNA tag team twice once under the NWA banner and once not. On October 7, 2010, the Dudley Boyz began to announce their retirement only for Bubba to turn on Devon and take the name, Bully Ray. They stayed apart and often feuded, for 3 years but on March 10,2013 they reunited in the heel faction Aces and 8’s but would be forced apart by losing a “tag team splits match” in August. On June 14,2014 they were inducted into TNA’s hall of fame. In 2015 The Dudley Boyz would return to the WWE only to retire a year later.

The Dudley Boyz are one of the most successful tag teams of all time. Although they had individual success as well, it will never match the 23 world tag team championships they won together.
