WWE U.K. Championship Tournament Preview: Night One

Tomorrow marks the first of two action-packed days that will wrap up the WWE U.K. Championship Tournament, plus a few bonus NXT title matches and 6-mans to boot.

The tournament for the 18th and 19th of June is brought to you from the Royal Albert Hall in London, England and is to be aired on the WWE Network the following week on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th June at 8pm ET/3pm BST.

Night one will feature four quarter and both semi-finals of the tournament plus a 6 Man Tag and a 6 way to decide who will face Shayna Baszler for the NXT Women’s Championship. The following night, includes most of the NXT Championships being defended, Adam Cole and Undisputed’s challengers still yet to be announced, plus Pete Dunne defending his title against the winner of the night’s final match of the tournament. Not to mention a tag team match featuring Aleister Black and Ricochet against Velveteen Dream and EC3.

I expect this to be an awesome event, hopefully as good as the last one that was held, possibly even better. Did I mention that Triple H and The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels are scheduled to show their faces??

Here I will look at what matches we will enjoy on night one, check back tomorrow to see who will be moving on to day two!

6 Man Tag:
Undisputed Era (Cole, Strong and O’Reilly) Vs British Strong Style (Dunne, Bate, and Seven)

Here is one we have all been waiting for, when the trio of Dunne, Bate, and Seven get going they are a tough bunch to beat and although Undisputed is riding the waves of success at the moment, I fully expect it to be British Strong Style that walk out victorious. The WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne is still looking to get revenge on Roderick Strong for his betrayal when the two men were teaming up against Strong’s current stablemates, but with their numbers advantage, Dunne was never quite able to get his own back, until now that is.

Expect the Era to put up a fight in this but the hometown advantage will win out for Dunne’s boys here, the momentum carrying him into his defense the following night.

Triple Threat #1 Contenders match for the NXT Women’s Championship on Night 2:
Toni Storm Vs Killer Kelly Vs Isla Dawn

This should be an epic encounter with the winner getting a shot at NXT gold the next night. We get the lovely Toni Storm who is the current WxW Women’s Champion and my favorite to win. Isla Dawn who appeared on WWE tv less than a year ago when she was forced to tap out to the Asuka Lock in Manchester, England. Finally, Killer Kelly of Portugal who has not only a badass demeanor but the charisma to be a threat like she has been all over Europe.

This match has former and current champions from all of the top Indy promotions across Europe and is most definitely intended to be a slobberknocker!

Note: The match was changed from a 6-pack challenge to a triple threat featuring Toni Storm, Killer Kelly, and Isla Dawn. Unsure why Clara Sinclair, Jinny, and Lana Austin were removed from the card.

QF#1: Zack Gibson Vs Gentleman Jack Gallagher

Gentleman Jack Gallagher of 205 Live is a former 2x FutureShock Champion and has been around the horn in the U.K. Indy scene over the years, he is polite but vicious and packs a mean headbutt. Gallagher is at the top of his game and looking to dethrone Pete Dunne, but first, he has to go through Zack Gibson of Liverpool, one half of The Grizzled Young Veterans tag team. This villain is both hated and loved and is best known for his time in Progress and Defiant, I expect this to be a hard-hitting affair with a few teeth being left in the Royal Albert Hall. Gibson is fast and tough, Gallagher is just as tough and even more technical, meaning that Gibson is going to have to use every trick at his disposal to pull off the win here.

QF#2: Flash Morgan Webster Vs Jordan Devlin

Jordan Devlin of Ireland is a former student of current  Raw superstar Finn Balor, and it definitely shows. Which is why I’m expecting him to go forward to the semi’s from here, although I expect his opponent Flash Morgan Webster will have a few problems with this. The ‘Modfather’ has been seen on 205 in London before and also appeared at the 2017 PWG Battle of Los Angeles. This should be a great battle and despite the strengths, Webster possesses I don’t see him being victorious this time around but don’t expect this to be the last you see of either man regardless of what happens.

QF#3: Joe Coffey Vs Dave Mastiff

The Iron King Vs The Mastiff; This one could be my favorite match of the night, both huge men battling it out for the chance to wrestle twice more in the evening, expect the building to shake during this encounter. I’m partial to both competitors so I’m not going to choose a winner here, I simply like both of them in different ways and for that reason can’t decide a winner. Simply put let the best man win. Expect the winner of this to also go through to the finals and possibly the second night.

QF#4: Travis Banks Vs Ashton Smith

The current Progress Champion and Defiant Internet Champion had a great match with El Ligero to get here, and I expect the match to be just as good, with Ashton Smith being on fire in the U.K. scene at the moment, being the current FutureShock Champion. So with it being a non-title Champion Vs Champion match, ’m wondering just how great a match this could turn out. To be honest it’s hard to even call which will be the top match given that the arch may be top in its own right.

Final Match: TBD

Check out our review of Night 1 after the event to see who goes through from the quarterfinals and into the finals, plus who will be entering the open slots on Night 2.
