G1 Climax 28 A-Block Final Review

We enter the hallowed halls of Nippon Budokan for the first of 3 nights that will decide the winner of the G1 Climax.

G1 Climax 28 A-block final: Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi:

Before Okada and Omega were breaking records all over wrestling, Okada and Tanahashi was the banner feud for NJPW. Putting on classic after classic after classic, in what could be considered the best feud of the decade. Tonight we get to add yet another chapter to this hallowed story between two of the best wrestling talents walking the planet, Hiroshi Tanahashi the Ace of NJPW and Okada the Rainmaker.

The match is starting off with a slow and methodical pace, a signature of clashes between these two. Tanahashi is using the pace to his advantage and slows down Okada.

Both the crowd and the momentum are firmly behind the Ace as the match goes on. Okada still looking rather lost as he has during the block at times. Okada is slowly starting to gain a foothold in this match but Tanahashi isn’t making anything easy for the Rainmaker.

I’m just in a state of awe here, these two are just plain leaving it all on the line with no signs of stopping, it’s like they don’t even realize they would have one more match to go for the G1. It’s insane the amount of punishment being dished out by these two.

The clock is ticking though, as every G1 match has a 30 min time limit and this one is nearing north of 20 minutes, Okada is feeling the pressure as a draw would send Tanahashi into the final. Such an amazing story being told by these two.

Okada hits a Tombstone and lets out a primal scream into the air, he wants to win this match with every fiber of his being. He’s trying to land the Rainmaker Lariat but Tanahashi keeps avoiding it and almost picks up the victory via roll up.

The announcer yells that there’s one minute left! This is it! The tension is palpable, Okada goes for one last Rainmaker but again Tanahashi avoids him and lands a High Fly Flow, but it doesn’t matter!

The clock reaches zero, we’ve hit the 30 minute time limit and the match goes down as a draw. Tanahashi has advanced into the G1 final!

Draw.

G1 Climax 28 A-Block Winner: Hiroshi Tanahashi

Tanahashi grabs the mic post-match and thanks to the crowd for coming which garners thunderous applause and cheers for the Ace. He tells the crowd that he will be victorious in the G1 final.

The other story here is, what does this mean for Okada? He doesn’t have a path now after this G1 Climax. He no longer has a seat atop the table come WK13 in the IWGP Heavyweight Title scene. We’ll see what develops in the forthcoming months before Tokyo Dome.
