The SmackDown Showdown: 10/9/18

With a stellar RAW the night before SmackDown had some big events to follow. Going into the show we knew Becky and Charlotte would meet once again as well as some World Cup Tournament qualification action. With the WWE in full swing with promoting their next two events, they don’t have a moment to waste on filler. Let’s get to the action!

The Matches:

SmackDown Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Charlotte Flair – No Contest

WWE World Cup Qualifier: Jeff Hardy defeated Samoa Joe by Ref Stoppage

AJ Styles defeated Shelton Benjamin by Pin

WWE World Cup Qualifier: Randy Orton defeated Big Show by Pin

The Stories:

The Lass and the Queen Wage War Again

We kicked SmackDown Live off with a bang as current Women’s Champion Becky Lynch once again battled her rival Charlotte Flair. These two have gone to hell and back and don’t seem to be slowing down whatsoever. It was said by SmackDown General Manager Paige that if Becky got herself DQ’d again, she’d lose the belt. This would play a factor in their match as Becky had contemplated cracking Flair with the title once again, but thought otherwise.

These two have zero love lost as it seems both are willing to sacrifice everything to end the other. They brawled and fought all over the arena from in the ring, ringside and all the way up to the stage. Charlotte would eventually spear the hell out of Lynch through the LED set, leaving both in a heap of destruction. FUrthering the story that both are willing to go to whatever extreme necessary to destroy the other. Later on, we’d learn that the rematch between the two at Evolution will be a Last Woman Standing Match.

Miz TV Sets the Tone for SmackDown Live

The Miz was back on SmackDown Live with his top-notch talk show segment, Miz TV. His guests this week were WWE Champion AJ Styles and #1 Contender Daniel Bryan. The Miz was the butt of some early jokes but then began his usual mind games. He would chime in and contort the words of both the champion and challenger in order to stoke the fires of their match at Crown Jewel. But, as we’ve seen time and time again with Miz, his mouth got him into trouble.

As Bryan and Styles were ready to clock Miz, he went into one of the legendary promo tirades that would culminate with him stating he is next in line for the winner. He would also let AJ know that he wouldn’t be in for an easy night as he would have to battle Shelton Benjamin. Just a week after beating Daniel Bryan, Shelton would give Styles everything he had but ultimately come up short. With Crown Jewel less than a month away and a big-time match for the WWE Championship set, who will walk away the winner? And for that winner, will they be prepared for what Miz will have in store for them?

What Was Brewing in Milwaukee?

For the second week in a row, Aiden English was teasing some more footage from that night in Milwaukee. He made it clear to Rusev that he would destroy any and all footage if Rusev simply left Lana and reformed Rusev Day. Rusev finally decided that he wanted to see all of the footage no matter what it may include. English began to cower and try and get out of it but Lana stepped up and said if he wouldn’t then she would.

It seems Lana is a world-class hacker and was able to get into Aiden’s phone. Well, actually Aiden just has some really weak password protection. Come on my dude, it’s like you’ve never read one of those password requirements blurbs. When all was said and done it appears that Lana went to English that night to show her appreciation on behalf of Rusev and herself. English was still a super creep and tried to make a move. Rusev snapped and was able to get his hands on English for a few shots before English ran away.

SmackDown Turns 1000

Next week we’ll be treated to the history-making 1000th episode of SmackDown. More names were announced this week as being on the show including the Undertaker and Rey Mysterio. Not only will we get the WWE return of Mysterio but also his in-ring return as he’ll face Shinsuke Nakamura in a World Cup Qualifier. Add into that the return of Batista and Edge, this show is shaping up to be a good mix of current and nostalgia.

Overall Reaction:

Another great show by the WWE this week. Coming off of a meh show in Super Show-Down they over delivered with both RAW and SmackDown Live. Another night of solid matches and storyline advancement leaves me happy. I was worried that with Evolution and Crown Jewel so close to one another that both would suffer but these last two nights have added fuel to the fires. I’m really looking forward to next week as it will be SmackDown 1000 and should be an awesome show.

Overall Rating: 8.5/10
